Green peas puree

This Puréed Green Split Peas is a creamy mashed potato like comfort food dish from my childhood. My mom used to make this dish often. On Sundays after church we would have Puréed Green Split Peas with my Grandma’s Chicken Sauce – Manja on top. Delish!!! It also works beautifully next to a main course, for example with Braised Lamb Shanks or one of my favorites Roasted Duck Kaurma. It makes a very healthy, nutritious and filling lunch or dinner.

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients:
4-5cups water
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
1lb. yellow or green split peas, soaked overnight and rinsed
1 small onion
1 bay leaf

Direction:
Rinse the split peas, then put into a pot and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil. Drain and rinse it in a colander. Put the peas back into the pot and add four cups of water. Bring to a boil, add the whole onion and bay leaf. Season with salt and pepper and simmer, partly covered, for about 55-60 minutes, stirring from time to time until all the water has been absorbed. Watch to see if you need to add more water. Discard the onion. Mash the peas either with food processor or potato masher until smooth like soft mashed potato. Most of it will have collapsed on its own and it may not even be necessary to purée. Serve warm with my delicious Chicken Gravy.

Note: If you have made it ahead of time and want to reheat, you will need to add some water to your heating pan and mix it well to thin out again to a soft creamy mash, as it will have set in a clump.

Enjoy!!!
